In relation to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that a law banning offensive trademarks is unconstitutional, the following may be attributed to ACLU of Virginia Executive Director Claire Guthrie Gastañaga:

“The government should not be in the position of deciding for others what they can call themselves or whether their names should receive trademark protection based on whether they may be offensive to some. We believe the court made the correct ruling in this case, and are confident they will reach the same conclusion regarding Washington, D.C.’s professional football team.”
