Ads running today in nine newspapers in targeted congressional districts across the country, including the Petersburg Progress-Index in Virginia’s Fourth District
Washington. D.C. – The American Civil Liberties Union announced today that, beginning Thursday January 4, a new print advertisement will run in targeted congressional districts, calling on the 110 th Congress to restore the constitutional freedoms lost in recent years. The ad outlines a wish list of four New Year’s resolutions for the new Congress, including “end torture in secret prisons,” “restore habeas corpus and due process,” “stop warrantless eavesdropping on innocent Americans,” and “bring the Patriot Act in line with the Constitution.”
“The ACLU is hopeful that the 110 th Congress will perform its constitutional duty to act as a check and balance to the executive branch, and we are committed to ensuring that vital American freedoms are restored in the coming year,” said Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. “But we can’t do it alone. We’re inviting Americans across the nation who are troubled by the abuses of power committed by the current administration to stand with us.”
Ads are running today in nine newspapers in targeted congressional districts across the country. In addition to an ad in the Petersburg Progress Index -- targeting U.S. Representative Randy Forbes of the Fourth Congressional District -- ads are appearing in newspapers in Ohio, North Carolina, Iowa, Utah, Florida, Michigan, and Missouri (two).
“We are calling on Representative Randy Forbes to repair the damage done to the Constitution by an overreaching executive branch,” said ACLU of Virginia executive director Kent Willis. “It’s a new year, a new Congress, and new opportunity for Representative Forbesto demonstrate his commitment to protecting core American values.”
“We’re hoping that many of Forbes’s constituents will read the ad and let him know that they want him to act to restore our freedoms lost in recent years,” added Willis.
