Black and brown communities have been most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic at all levels, including for those behind bars, which has not received much attention. The Virginia COVID-19 Justice Coalition has been advocating for officials to release people who are in custody and do not pose a demonstrable, imminent threat of bodily harm to others, as quickly as possible, and with full transparency. Elected officials must work together to find legislative solutions to this problem.
