Richmond, VA — American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia Executive Director Claire G. Gastañaga issued a statement today in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:
MLK JR“Martin Luther King Jr.’s life is a lasting example of the power that we, as a civil rights community, have to effect change, when we stand firmly for what we believe and do not allow ourselves to be silenced.  We should not be intimidated by those who try to pass wrongs for rights and injustices for justice.  As we honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s achievements and celebrate his memory, let us feel empowered to continue the fight, his fight, for the civil rights and liberties of all individuals.  Whether it’s the disproportionate impact of mass incarceration and the school-to-prison pipeline on communities of color, or the lack of meaningful access to state contracts for minority owned business, or the disproportionate impact of Virginia’s restrictive reproductive health policies and practices on communities of color, Dr. King’s dream is still a long way off in the Commonwealth.”
