The following statement may be attributed to ACLU of Virginia Executive Director Claire Guthrie Gastañaga:

“The ACLU of Virginia is pleased that Sheriff Bob Mosier has withdrawn his application for authority under 287(g) to enforce federal immigration law at the Fauquier jail. We are hopeful he and his colleagues in other jurisdictions across Virginia have come to see that volunteering to become ICE officers is the ‘bad idea’ that we said it was in our letters to the Sheriff’s Association and Sheriff Mosier. At the same time, the sheriff should know that the new administrative warrant being issued by ICE provides no constitutional authority for any sheriff or other correctional officer or agency to hold any person for any time (minutes, hours or days) after the person’s state or local sentence ends.”
