"We are encouraged by the Court's action today on the Texas affirmative action case, Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. The Court's recognition that public universities can take positive steps to ensure they have diverse and inclusive student bodies is especially important in a state like Virginia that historically segregated its schools and colleges by law. It's also important to permit public colleges to go beyond mechanistic approaches like the Texas 10% rule where educational inequality and resegregation of schools are a continuing blight on our dream of equal opportunity for all."
