RICHMOND, Va. – The ACLU of Virginia has issued the following statement with regard to the execution of Mr. Alfredo Prieto. It should be attributed to ACLU of Virginia Executive Director Claire Guthrie Gastañaga.

“It is saddening that the Commonwealth of Virginia continues to exercise the death penalty, and further shameful that it would kill a person who may have had an intellectual disability even as the U.S. Supreme Court has said such an action would be unconstitutional. There is no excuse for such barbarism in a civilized society."
