Get the Facts Right about a Second Look Law

Here's what a Second Look law would do and would NOT do.

It doesn’t make sense to incarcerate people who are no longer a threat to public safety.

A Second Look law would empower and protect victims of crime, not re-traumatize them.

Judges are required to consider a wide range of factors to make a decision.

Second Look legislation acknowledges that both people and laws change.

It’s more efficient — and less partisan — to create a permanent mechanism like Second Look than a resentencing bill for every new law. Second Look legislation would make correctional staff and Virginia safer by incentivizing good behavior. It is a smart fiscal policy that will grow Virginia's labor market by $19 million in 5 years.

Most importantly, it would reunite families torn apart by the criminal legal system.
