A Girlfriend's Story

These words are from a girlfriend of a man incarcerated at Indian Creek Correctional Facility: "My boyfriend is currently incarcerated at Indian Creek Correctional Facility in Chesapeake. He recently has spoken with the Chief of Housing Programs as well as the Unit Manager at Indian Creek Correctional. He asked both of them why the new criteria for early release (that got approved on May 11, 2020), has not been made known to any inmates and they both said that they knew nothing about any new criteria. The Virginia DOC has also failed to keep up with the terms of the settlement agreement. VaDOC has not updated anything on Jpay/kiosk machines. Inmates at this facility have no knowledge of such agreement or about the new criteria made on May 11, 2020 in the settlement agreement. As of May 21, only 3 inmates have been released from this facility. The inmates at this facility are packed into these tiny human warehouses which makes social distancing impossible. Brian Moran specifically said each inmate would receive 2 bars of soap a week. Inmates are only receiving 1 bar of soap a week. The public was told that inmates would receive two 5-minute phone calls a week to call their loved ones. At first, they did follow through on that, but now inmates are only receiving one 5-minute phone call a week, and no one has given inmates an explanation for the sudden change that Mr. Moran promised. Inmates there also do not have access to any amped up cleaning supplies of chemicals to clean their bed areas or common areas. They have no access to any type of gloves to wear for protection from this virus. His family members and I are very concerned about his health because he suffers from asthma."
