Guantanamo and Habeas: What's at Stake?

March 21, 2007 (All day)

On March 21, 2007, the chapter hosted a riveting discussion on the issue of habeas corpus rights for Guantanamo detainees. The event took place at the Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre in Arlington Virginia.

The debate featured Jumana Musa, of Amnesty International, Tom Wilner, of Shearman and Sterling, Steven Groves, of the Heritage Foundation, and David Lachmann, Chief of Staff of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties of the House Judiciary Committee.

The event attracted seasoned policy experts and newcomers to the issue alike. The discussion was educational and informative, and the debate, intense. The defender of the detainees (Mr. Wilner) squared off against the defender of current administration’s policies (Mr. Groves). Ms. Musa laid out the framework explaining why the current legal treatment of detainees is illegal while Mr. Lachmann discussed the future legislation that may answer the question of the legal status of these detainees.
