About 50 members attended this year’s legislative brunch, held on February 19 and sponsored by the Northern Virginia chapter. After enjoying a delicious brunch, the audience listened to ACLU of Virginia Legislative Counsel Hope Amezquita speak about bills pending in the 2012 session of the Virginia General Assembly. Topics covered included: reproductive rights, voting rights, shackling of pregnant inmates and other criminal justice issues, the death penalty, privacy rights, free speech, religious freedom, immigrants’ rights, gay and lesbian rights, and open government.
Hope’s talk was followed by an active Q&A session, with lots of audience interest and participation. Members left the session eager to get involved in ACLU initiatives!
