Censoring Obscenity in Public Colleges and Universities
HB 1296 (Pogge)
Committee: House Education
ACLU Position: Opposes
Summary: Requires that no public money, including activities fees, be used in the display of any art, literature, theater performance or movie on a public college campus that contains obscenity unless written permission has been given by the governing body or board of visitors.
Comments: Under current Virginia law, such performances are exempt from Virginia’s obscenity law. HB 1296 would allow governing bodies of public colleges to censor these kinds of performances.
Status: Left in Education.
